Physical Education

Intent

Physical wellbeing is paramount at Hazelbury. With an inclusive and high-quality curriculum, we inspire all pupils to succeed and excel their individual abilities in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities. We believe our pupils should practise skills in a range of different activities, alone, in small groups and teams, to apply these skills in chosen activities.  Pupils are therefore physically active every day.

We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. PE at Hazelbury is an imperative element of the curriculum, which develops:

- a need for healthy life styles

- a balanced diet

- a positive growth mind-set

- the resilience to persevere with activities that may be once have felt too difficult.

We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Implement

Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and competitions/events to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.

Pupils at Hazelbury participate in weekly high-quality PE and sporting activities twice a week (including swimming lessons in Year 5). Lessons encourage activity through the practice of transferable skills as well as the teaching of discreet sporting skills.

Through Enfield Learning Trust network meetings, strategies and ideas are discussed and implemented to further improve our sporting provisions.

Engagement of pupils in a broad range of physical activities

We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events both within the Enfield Learning Trust and the borough.

This is an inclusive approach, which endeavours to encourage not only physical development, but also well-being for all pupils.

Increase confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

We provide ongoing support for staff through a coaching and mentoring programme with the Lead Sports coach to improve teaching skills and knowledge as well as provide engaging activities at both lunch and play times.

CPD opportunities are also provided through staff training to maintain and develop the highest standards.  Additionally, we often work with sporting organisations to offer skill developing workshops.

Pupil leadership

Through our Sports Council and Games-makers programmes, we will develop pupils who take initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising, officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, while motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others.

Impact

Children will have a sense of team spirit and sportsmanship through exposure to a variety of sports and/or enriching extra-curricular clubs.  In addition, pupils will have participated in competitive sport whether it be intra-competitions, borough tournaments or sporting events wider afield.

Our pupils will understand how to look after their physical well-being and recognise the link to positive mental health and the importance of this in their lives.
